Commemoration
In memory of the 31 sailors of the San Patrick
Memorial Mass at the Basílica de Begoña
On December 17, 2014, marking the 50th anniversary of the wreck, a memorial mass was held in honour of the 31 crew members of the San Patrick at the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Begoña (Basilica of Our Lady of Begoña), in Bilbao.
It was the first occasion on which many of the victims’ families were able to meet each other, share their memories and pay joint tribute to their loved ones. The event was organized by Juan José Gámiz Díez, nephew of the electrician Pedro María Gámiz Frade, who has spent years investigating the tragedy.
